All classes will be held in the rooms at 106 West Tamaki Rd, although field trips in Genealogy and other courses may also be conducted when appropriate.
To enrol, leave a voice mail message by phoning (09)578 0994 giving your name, phone number and the name of the course in which you would like to enrol. If you require assistance in making your choice, i.e. you are unsure of which course best suits your needs or whether it would be of any use to you, please tell us in the message and we will phone you back to discuss this. In all courses, printed notes are provided and, in most, a floppy disk or CD containing the exercises, is also provided. Please pay for your tuition when you arrive for the first class of the course.
Should you feel stressed when learning in a class with others, and are unable to cope with that, it may be possible to arrange one-on-one tuition for you, depending on the availability of tutors and computer rooms.
Should you feel that, after several tries of working from the course notes you are unable to understand a lesson you should contact the tutor, preferably by e-mail, or telephone.

A general meeting and lecture is usually held on the third Wednesday of each month from 10-11am at the St Heliers Church and Community Centre, 100 St Heliers Bay Rd. The lecture is usually followed by questions and answers from one or more guest speakers on a topic of interest to SeniorNet. Other matters of administrative or computing importance may also be discussed.
In June, this meeting becomes the Annual General meeting.

There is no charge for this Discussion Group and members are invited to ask questions about computer problems that they are experiencing or even about ways of achieving things in particular programs. Even if you have been to a class that teaches this you can still ask about it.
Participants in the group will try and answer your questions and all members are invited to try and volunteer a solution if they have experience of the problem. If you have no pressing problem how about coming along anyway - you may learn something or be able to contribute? If we run out of questions and/or answers there will be short discussions of some aspect of a program or two.

A seminar on how to select a camera in terms of specifications, reliability pricing and other important factors.
This course is especially designed for those who are new to computing or who have little experience with computers. It is intended to introduce you to the basic operations, terminology and layout of the Windows Vista interface. Some basic text editing skills and functions such as opening, saving, printing and closing a file will be covered.
A knowledge of the keyboard is a great help. If you are not a typist or have only a little keyboard skill, we recommend that you take time to learn the keyboard. A tutor could give you some tips on technique which will speed up your learning.
A printer connected to your computer is a must.
Microsoft Windows Vista is all you really need for this course. A Word Processing program is desirable and this can be Microsoft Word for Windows up to 2003, Microsoft Works or OpenOffice.org Writer. If you have no Word Processing program, a tutor will be able to install the free OpenOffice.org Suite on your computer.
At the end of this course, you will be able navigate your way around the Windows programme, write a letter, play some music, play some games and much more.

This course teaches you how to run your computer better, faster, safer and more securely. The course does not involve working on the hardware. Software programs built into the Windows system are used.
Introductory Computer Skills (or equivalent experience) is desirable.

This workshop will cover the transferring of photographs from a digital camera to a computer and managing them using the Windows file management program Windows Explorer. If requested and time permits, we will have a look at Picasa. Photo-editing will not be covered

PLEASE NOTE: Outlook Express and Windows Mail are the same email program. Only the name and the computer's operating system are different.
This course is intended to give the student an understanding of the basic skills required to create, edit, save and print spreadsheets using the MS Excel program which is in wide use in the commercial sector.
Spreadsheets are mostly used for working financial data and making lists. Data is entered into the "cells" and using formulae it is possible to quickly sum, multiply, subtract, divide or apply a host of other functions to it. If new data is entered, or data is removed or altered, the spreadsheet automatically updates the results in the blinking of an eye.
Elementary manipulation of Windows, opening and closing files, moving files, basic cut, copy and paste procedures. a good grasp of the first seventeen of the skills listed in the Skills Assessment Chart is recommended.
Students must have MS Excel installed on their computers.
This course covers the Windows folder structure and management of files using the Microsoft file management programme called Windows Explorer in WindowsXP and Windows Vista.
Students should be familiar with the Microsoft screen layout, menus and toolbars.
Confidence and competence in your chosen Computer Awareness course is really desirable.

File Management in earlier versions of Windows is very similar to WindowsXP. So those still with earlier versions are NOT excluded from this course. Good file management skills are a boon to happy computing!
An introductory course of two classes and two field trips, in a subject much sought after by grey-headed students.
Of the several Genealogy computer programs commercially available, Legacy 5.0 is a popular choice and is the basis of this course. Audio-visual instruction material comes on CD’s produced by Millennium Corporation, the developers of Legacy. A comprehensive manual and further training materials are available from the Auckland agent.
You should be a reasonably competent computer user before tackling this topic and also be prepared to devote at least four hours to ‘homework’ between sessions.

A general refresher and Q & A session to get you back on track with your family history project.
Open to any/all of those who have previously attended a SNEB Genealogy course or new members with a basic knowledge of Legacy. You may have been too busy to use your Legacy software, have become rusty and your family history project has lapsed!

This workshop is an extension of the MS Publisher course and is intended for those members interested in making Greeting Cards and creating other items on their computer.
Good basic computer skills are necessary for this workshop.
You must have completed Publisher Part 1 course or be very confident with all the following functions in MS Word. You should be very familiar with the functions of cut, copy and paste, font, paragraph, text box and picture manipulation.
The workshop will be based on MS Publisher Version 2003. Some differences with other versions will be experienced, but they should not be an insurmountable problem.
Numbers will be limited
An introduction to the World Wide Web. This course, based on Internet Explorer, explains the Internet and the use of search engines.
Knowledge of Copying and pasting is essential
This course uses Movie Maker version 6 which comes with Vista.
Students should have a good background in general computing.
Knowledge and experiencence in file management and picture editing will be a great help.
Windows Vista
An introduction to photo-editing and enhancing.
This course is suitable for people who are reasonably adept at basic computing skills.
It is not necessary to have a digital camera or a scanner.
The light edition of Version 5 of Photoshop is used, but there is considerable overlap with numerous photo-editing and graphics programs so it is not necessary for participants to own Photoshop
A series of follow-up workshops, held approximately monthly, is available to participants without charge.
Learn to use Powerpoint to design attention-grabbing presentations
Participants are taught how to produce a slide show using this program. Methods for introducing text, the use of bullets and template backgrounds are discussed. Also included are the uses of animation, transitions and sound effects.
A course based on Publisher 2003 covering various aspects of creative computing.
A good knowledge of MS Word is a help; students will find this programme gives them the ability to make graphic productions with greater ease

The course is an introduction to scanning for photocopying, processing photographs and optical character recognition - converting printed paper text into digital form, such as MS Word documents.
A good level of Computer Skills is required for this course
A scanner and printer (any brand), connected to your computer, are required.
Microsoft Windows (any version) plus programs for photo editing and optical character recognition, which are usually supplied with your scanner. PhotoStudio, Paint.net, Photoshope Elements will be looked at in class.the OCR programs ABBY Fine Reader and OmniPage will be looked at also.

This course takes the student further into the powerful program Microsoft Word2003 following on from the Computer Awareness course for WindowsXP. It does not, however, purport to cover all aspects of the MS Word2003 program.
The course takes the student through a revision of some of the Introductory subjects, then onto document layout, document enhancement and finally document saving and printing, using many of the icons on the toolbars and choices from the drop-down menus. The subject matter of this course is sufficiently interesting to permit the student to use a wide range of the program’s facilities to prepare excellent documents with plenty of visual interest.
The student is expected to have completed the Introductory Computer Skills course, or acquired at least six of the first nine skills listed in the Skills Assessment Chart that accompanies this course.
Microsoft Word2003 or any earlier version of MS Word. NOte: MS Word2007 is very different and can not be taught in this course.
